1930 UPEC CONVENTION, SAN LEANDRO. Pres. Frank E. Pinheiro (Frank E. Pine) presides over the 1930 convention, which celebrated the 50th anniversary of the UPEC in San Leandro. Born in Faial in 1889, Pinheiro enrolled in the seminary, which was one of the few ways to get a good education in the Azores at the time. After immigrating to Boston, Massachusetts, in 1906 to work as a barber, Pinheiro moved to Oakland and opened his own cleaners. In 1932, after a few years of working as a manager at Mission Chapel Mortuary, Pinheiro (Pine) opened his own shop with three partners. The Hanrahan, Wadsworth, Pine, and Borba Mortuary was also known as East Lawn Chapel. Pinheiro became very active in the UPEC and also served as president of Cabrilho Club No. 11 of Alameda County.
